Maynardville, Tennessee was originally a small town called Liberty. It was chosen to be the county seat of the developing Union County. After legislation was passed to establish the county, Knox County tried to prevent its formation because some of the land belonged to Knox. Supporters of Union County enlisted the help of Horace Maynard, an attorney in the area, to defend their case for building the county. After the case was won, in 1856, Liberty was renamed Maynardville in his honor.
